Five Cheshire College – South & West students have secured a fantastic 2-0 victory in a national competitive video gaming tournament known as the British Esports Student Champs.
The competition, titled ‘The Champs’, is open to all secondary schools and colleges across the UK and is an exciting opportunity for students to put their gaming skills to the test.
Cheshire College students Katrina Chrzanaowska, Drew Bailey, Luke Scully, Deivid Asledov and Nikodem Klonowski under the name ‘CheshireCollSW’, were competing in Division 2 and playing the popular video game ‘League of Legends’ against Queen Mary’s College of Basingstoke, Hampshire.
The five students on the Cheshire College team are set to be in Division 1 next season.
Three of the successful students are currently studying for a Level 3 qualification in Esports at Cheshire College. The two-year, full-time course was introduced in 2021 and is designed to support progression into employment in one of the world’s fastest-growing industries. The course has already seen success earlier this year with a team of nine students ranking third place at the Northern finals of Digital Schoolhouse’s Super Smash Bros Tournament in March 2022.
Following their recent victory, the team were awarded a Champions Trophy, as well as individual recognitions for each player, including the coveted MVP (Most Valuable Player) award for Luke Scully.
Phil Farrington, Assistant Director of Visual and Performing Arts at Cheshire College, says: “We’re extremely proud of the students who demonstrated their skills on a national level. Their win was a major achievement and we’re looking forward to entering even more competitions.
“The Gaming industry is expected to have a revenue forecast of £219 billion by 2027 and this expected growth means that the sector is set to become one of the fastest growing in the world which could create incredibly opportunities for our existing and prospective Esports students.”
