The Course

What can we do about childhood obesity?  Why do we need to worry about the UK’s £1 trillion of national debt? If you’ve ever wondered about why footballers get paid more than nurses, or what caused the financial crisis, then Economics is for you.  Economics relates to every aspect of our lives, from the decisions we make as individuals to the structures created by governments and firms. In a nutshell – Economics will help you to understand how the world works.

Economics is concerned with the key issues facing us today, including globalisation, pollution and poverty. You will study issues such as unemployment, pollution, demand and supply, banking and finance, business economics, and the difficult decisions the UK Government faces when it attempts to steer the economy in a chosen direction. You will learn to understand the world around us; it’s current, it’s about the modern world, it’s about how we behave, how businesses behave and how the government behaves. Economics links well with most subjects especially subjects like Maths, Psychology, Geography, Government and Politics, and Philosophy. The course is considered to be a ‘gold standard’ – an academic course that is well respected and liked by universities.

Economics students make a significant contribution to the annual MMU’s Festival of Social Science and participate in Warwick University’s Economics in Action Conference. Students also have the opportunity to take part in the Business/Economics residential to New York.

100% assessment by examination at the end of the second year. Students take 3 exam papers, 1 in microeconomics, 1 in macroeconomics and 1 covering all areas of the syllabus.
