How to apply

The Course

This T Level programme has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so everything you will learn will meet the needs of industry and prepare you for work. The course will provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door to highly skilled employment, an Apprenticeship or higher level study, including university.

The core component provides a broad understanding of education and childcare and what it covers. In your first year you will study the following topics:

  • Supporting Education Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Wellbeing
  • Behaviour
  • Parents, Families and Carers
  • Working with Others
  • Child Development
  • Observation and Assessment
  • Reflective Practice
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Special Educational Needs and Disability
  • English as an Additional Language

The core component will be assessed through a project set by employers in the industry and two externally-set tests.

The industry placement combined with the occupational specialism content will allow you to develop the relevant skills in preparation for your career in either early years or with assisting teaching. The occupational specialisms are assessed through skills-based assessments that have been created in conjunction with relevant employers.

The content of the Early Years Educator occupational specialism will accompany an extended industry placement of 700 hours over the two years and will cover the following topics:

  • Support and Promote Children’s Play, Development and Early Education
  • Develop Relationships with Children to Facilitate their Development
  • Plan, Provide and Review Care, Play and Educational Opportunities to Enable Children to Progress
  • Safeguard and Promote the Health, Safety and Wellbeing of Children
  • Work in Partnership with Colleagues, Parents, Carers and other Professionals to Support Children’s Development

The content of the Assisting Teaching occupational specialism will cover the following topics:

  • Support the class teacher to enhance children’s education, individually and in groups
  • Plan, provide and review educational opportunities in collaboration with teachers and other adults
  • Safeguard and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of children and young people
  • Recognise, adapt and respond to individuals children’s needs, including those with SEND to support and develop and access the curriculum

Typically you will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C (or above), including grade 4/C (or above) for maths and English.

T Levels offer many opportunities for progression, including:

  • employment – you can use the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained to start working in the education sector
  • apprenticeship – there are many opportunities offered through apprenticeships that allow you to carry on learning (20%) whilst spending most of your time (80%) furthering your skills in the workplace
  • higher education – if you choose to study further, your T Level is worth UCAS points and will allow you entry onto certain courses. Please check the UCAS website as course entry requirements vary.

The overall aim of this T Level is to see you progress into a career in early years and education in roles such as a nanny, nursery practitioner, childminder or teaching assistant.
