How to apply

The Course

This course provides you with knowledge of the scale and context of suicide within the United Kingdom, its associated stigma and the main risk factors. This course is ideal for you if you are over the age of 16 and want to gain an understanding of suicide risk and how people might react when faced with a difficult situation or circumstance. You will consider the impact of challenging situations on mood and behaviour and how this can lead to negative thoughts and feelings. This will provide an awareness of how suicidal thoughts can arise and identify those at potential risk of suicide.

Note: this qualification focuses on risks and triggers that may lead an individual to experience suicidal thoughts. In view of the subject matter, it is essential that any student who is either undergoing talking therapies (such as cognitive behavioural therapy) or receiving counselling is aware of the sensitivity of the content.

This course should take no longer than one month to complete. This is a single unit qualification named ‘Understanding Suicide’, which will cover:

  • suicide in context
  • situations – an individual’s stressors
  • tolerance – an individual’s coping mechanisms
  • emotions – the impact on an individual’s wellbeing
  • perspective – an individual’s view of the situation and the future; and
  • solutions– what works and the importance of a conversation.

This is a remote learning course which will be assessed via a portfolio of evidence.

Flexible start dates and study options apply to this course.
